Mt. Sinai Medical Center
Listed in the top 20 of all U.S. hospitals based on reports that include patient satisfaction, reputation, patient safety, mortality, and several other factors, New York City’s Mt. Sinai Medical Center was founded in 1852 and is one of the nation’s largest and oldest voluntary teaching hospitals. The medical center employs more than 3,000 full-time and voluntary staff and serves about a half-million patients per year in their inpatient and outpatient facilities including many that arrive in New York from around the country to seek the care that Mt. Sinai provides.
The hospital’s Department of Oncological Services consists of two research divisions: Cancer Biology and Cancer Prevention and Control. In the first, faculty is involved in “investigations aimed at molecular understandings of the cellular processes and signaling pathways involved in the initiation and progression of human cancers as well as insights into molecular targets for innovative therapeutics.” In the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control, faculty members strive to “increase understanding of the role of psychological, social and bio-behavioral factors in the prevention of cancer and in the control of aversive sequelae of cancer and its treatment” through research, education, and outreach.
Mt. Sinai’s Thoracic Oncology Service provides multi-disciplinary care to individuals suffering from thoracic malignancies such as mesothelioma. It offers complete evaluation services via its state-of-the-art facilities, and doctors who specialize in the disease present patients with a full menu of treatment options that include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. The Thoracic Oncology department also regularly participates in clinical trials designed to evaluate and develop new treatment options for mesothelioma patients.
